The fantastic success of the "Dref Wen Key Stage 1 Welsh History Stories" in schools
throughout Wales and beyond, has led to a demand from teachers for an extension of the series.
As a result the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales (ACCAC) has
commissioned a further twelve titles, and the series now covers Key Stage 2, as well as having
additional titles for Key Stage 1, including the reception year. The new titles replicate the
successful formula used in the original books including, of course, the detailed, attractive
pictures that were so highly praised. Once again, the author of the series is John Evans, the
history adviser for Powys.
The covers of the new titles are shown opposite. The books
- have been commissioned by ACCAC to meet a continuing demand from teachers from all over Wales for appropriate and
attractive resources to teach Welsh history
- address both topics frequently studied at KS1 and also aspects of all study areas at KS2
- contain text and illustrations based on careful historical research, and tell the stories of real people from the history
of Wales
- tell the stories of men, women and children chosen from the history of all parts of Wales, and reflect the diversity of
experience of people in the past.
The books have been tested in schools to ensure that they meet the appropriate reading levels for the reception class, years
1 and 2, years 3 and 4, and years 5 and 6. They also have cross-curricular dimensions and support PSE and the Cwricwlwm
Cymreig.
Since producing the titles "William Morgan and the Welsh Bible" and "Jane Prichard Child of the Manor" in big book format,
we have been inundated with calls from teachers asking if the other titles in the series are available in the same format.
With the new titles big books will be on sale simultaneously and will accompany all four titles for Key Stage 1 and all four
titles for years 3 and 4 at Key Stage 2. Please tell your literacy co-ordinator about this important development.
A teacher’s guide will accompany the series and contain background information to all twelve stories. The guide will also
contain a range of activities to carry out alongside each title.
